In this lesson you’ll learn how to make a rawstyle kick in FL Studio. The good news is: you ONLY need FL Studio stock plugins to do this. Be aware: this is only the TAIL part of the kick. The tail is often the hardest part for most people and requires the most tweaking.
Rawstyle kick setup
The 3x Osc will be set to create the 909-ish kick signal. Starting out with 1 oscillator and a triangle waveform. You can make kicks with any of the waveforms available, but typically set it to triangle or sine.
To let the signal fade out naturally, it’s a good idea to set a volume envelope. And of course, also a pitch envelope to create a punch/oompff. The way you set this, isn’t really that important. Just go by taste.
Then route the kick signal to a free mixer track and let’s apply some effects.
Rawstyle kick effects
As always: use EQ’s & distortions to create the raw kick sound. Rawstyle kicks need that big boost in the area around 400-500 Hz in my experience. You could use some reverb to give the kick some sense of space. It can make your kick sound a lot bigger.
You may also want to add a filter sweep to create some movement. I often use the Fruity Love Philter to set a quick band pass sweep that creates a little bit more “growl” and movement.
Just keep working at it with some more EQing. It can make the kick sound shorter and “bouncier”. And again, feel free to also add another reverb for a little bit more space.
It’s always a good idea to finish with a distortion unit. Not only will it distort the kick, but it will also limit the signal.
Bear in mind that building a kick is always a creative process. Just play with all the settings until it starts to sound good. Just start somewhere and simply keep tweaking UNTIL it sounds better or closer to a rawstyle/hardstyle kick. Then move on to the next effect and make it better again.
