FL STUDIO PIANO ROLL TRICKS | How to Import & Export a Melody (via Score Files)

In this lesson you’ll learn how to import and export a melody in FL Studio via score files. A score file (.FSC) is simply a little file to store your piano roll notes. If you don’t really know how to open or save your piano roll notes, this lesson is for you.

How to export a melody

When you’ve made a cool melody and you want to use it in a different project or send it to your FL Studio buddy, you need to know how to export it. The exported melody will be saved to a score file (.FSC). To do that, simply follow these steps:

  1. Open the piano roll with your melody.
  2. Click on the arrow (or triangle) pointing downwards at the very upper-left corner of the piano roll.
  3. Click “File”.
  4. Click “Save score as…”
  5. Give your file a name & location.
  6. Click “Save”.

You’ve now successfully exported your melody.

How to import a melody

After you’ve exported your melody, you or your FL Studio buddy need(s) to know how to open it to use it in a different FL Studio project. The score file (.FSC) you just saved now needs to be imported. To import your melody, just follow these steps:

  1. Open the piano roll for the instrument you want to use to play the melody.
  2. Click on the arrow (or triangle) pointing downwards at the very upper-left corner of the piano roll.
  3. Click “File”.
  4. Click “Open score as”.
  5. Find your file’s a name & location.
  6. Click “Open”.

You’ve now successfully imported your melody.

Importing & exporting melodies in FL Studio is a very easy process, but as always, you need to know. Well, now you know.

Using midi files

In this lesson we’ve learned how to import and export a melody using score files, but you can also use midi files (.MID) in the exact same way. A midi file also contains your musical information.

You can always choose to import and export melodies with midi files. Midi files are more universal and can be opened in about any D.A.W. It’s totally up to you!
